De wind is weer gaan liggen, het zonnetje schijnt. Ik heb mijn wandeling door t park er weer opzitten en genoten van het gelach van de kookaburra en het gezang van de magpies! The sun is shining again and I enjoyed my walk through the park this morning. Kookaburra's were laughing and magpies singing!

Vanochtend hadden we een heerlijk zonnetje dus heb ik t gras gemaaid en alle ramen open gezet. Plots stak er een hevige wind op. De stoelen vlogen door de tuin, een bloempot is omgevallen en kapot. Voor, bij de bouwwerkzaamheden zag ik stukken plastic en emmers over t land heen waaien. Electriciteit viel uit. Heftig! En dan te bedenken dat t stormseizoen pas in de lente is! Momenteel begint de wind weer wat af te zwakken, maar op t filmpje kan je een beetje zien hoe t geweest is!

Alhoewel we allemaal wat in de lappenmand zaten vorige week. Hebben we zaterdagmorgen heel vroeg de wekker gezet. Om 4 uur s'ochtends zaten we op de bank naar t EK te kijken. En niet voor niets! Grappig ook om het dit keer met Australisch commentaar te bekijken. Aanvankelijk leken de Aussies wat voor de Fransen te zijn. En waren ze teleurgesteld in Henry. Although we were not feeling very well last week. We decided to get up early saturdaymorning to watch the European Soccer Championships 2008. At first it seemed as if the Australians wanted France to win and they were a bit dissapointed by Henry. But it all changed after the first goal of the Netherlands:

Imbala Jarjum are a dance group consisting of youth who represent the culture of the Peramangk people of the Adelaide Hills. As European settlement effected the Peramangk people in the early days with disease there was only a couple of surviving families, one of these families was the “Hunter” family who are the custodians of this country who we pay our respect. Imbala Jarjum have recreate the attire, language, dance, music to present a unique display of cultural dance with a contemporary influence depicting the diversity of the indigenous culture.

Friday SKYPE with the boys former school in the Netherlands. Afterwards: CHIPS!

 

Zaterdag echte OZZIE Shoes gekocht voor de jongens.  www.theage.com.au Makkelijk op school, en buiten. Hoge schoenen waar niet zo snel prikplanten of beesten in kunnen vallen tijdens de wandeling. Verder een grasmaaier gekocht maar daar ontbrak natuurlijk een onderdeel. Dus die gaat weer terug. Het is hier gebruikelijk een bijzonder kort gemaaid gazonnetje te hebben en aangezien ons grasveld nu al 10 cm hoog is....

Zaterdagavond zijn we weer naar Warrawong gegaan. Dit keer bij schemer. We hebben een rondleiding met gids gedaan. Dat kost wel geld overdag is de entree gratis. Ach,  het geld gaat naar de opvang van dieren. Het was heel erg leuk. Want we hebben nu allerlei Australische nachtdieren gezien die je anders niet snel ziet. En t was natuurlijk erg spannend zo’n wandeling door t donker. Ik kon geen foto’s maken. Mocht wel, maar ja ik ga die beestjes toch echt niet in hun oogjes flitsen! Dus we hebben heerlijk rondgekeken. Wederom de platypus gezien. Verder o.a.:  rufous bettongs, potoroos, tamar wallaby’s, ringtail possums, kangaroes, southern brown bandicoots en allerlei info over planten. Saturday we bought real Ozzie shoes for the boys. Very handy when we go bushwalking. We also bought a lawnmower but  as usual  there was one part  missing so we have to return it. Our lawn is now about 10 cm high…

We also went to Warrawong Sanctuary by night. Great we got to see all the animals you don’t see during the day. And  we enjoyed walking through the dark!!!

 

Ons huis in Bacchus Marsh is weer verhuurd. Fijn, geen dubbele huur meer voor ons.

We kunnen nu dan eindelijk op zoek gaan naar een eigen koopwoning. Het zal niet meevallen want de hypotheekrente is hier inmiddels gestegen tot 9,5 procent. De huizen lijken goedkoop maar de rente maakt het heel erg duur om een huis te kopen. Dat valt ons erg tegen.

Verder moet je letten op zaken als: zit je aangesloten op “main water” vaste waterleiding of heb je een watertank en moet je dus die laten bijvullen. Zit je aangesloten op de riolering of heb je een sceptic tank? Wat zijn toekomstplannen voor de omgeving? Want dan weet je min of meer of je huis en grond in waarde zal stijgen in de toekomst.

Our former house in Bacchus Marsh is re-rented so that’s a good thing because we now do not have to pay double rent anymore and we can start looking for a house to buy. Although its going to be tough with the high  interest on mortgages. So much higher than in the Netherlands.

 

Zo zijn we zondag vast eens bij een “open huis” bij een “cottage” 2 minuten van Strathalbyn geweest. Verder hebben we Macclesfield bekeken. Een erg leuk plaatsje. Er loopt een riviertje door en je hebt er veel “historic buildings”. Er was een heel klein marktje en daar heeft een goede verkoper ons bijenwas verkocht voor de nieuwe schoenen van de jongens. En we hebben er een garagesale bezocht. Ook nog even naar de wat grotere markt in Meadows geweest.

On Sunday we started house hunting. We also went to Macclesfield  a beautiful little township with a river and historic buildings.  A tiny little market with a good salesman that sold us bee wax for the new shoes of the boys. Afterwards we went to the slightly bigger Sunday market at Meadows.

 

Maandag hadden we allemaal vrij: the Queens birthday. En hadden we visite. Het was geen weer voor een BBQ gelukkig maar want die hebben we nog steeds niet.  Monday we had the day of because of the Queens Birthday. We Guess we had to have a BBQ. But it was rainy and we still have no BBQ . So we had chips again.

 

Voetbal: 3-0 NL-Italie, we konden deze wedstrijd niet op televisie volgen maar vanaf vrijdag zijn de wedstrijden hier wel te volgen op SBS. En dan kunnen we om 4 uur s’ochtends opstaan als we willen en alles live zien. Soccer: 3-0 Netherlands- Italy. Unfortunately we were not able to see the match. But on Friday you can watch the Netherlands play at SBS . Or do I have to say on Saturday morning. Because its at  4.00 PM.

Vandaag kon je  op mijn school schildpadden schoonmaken omdat als een schildpad koraal aan zijn schild  heeft kunnen er wormen opkomen en dat is niet goed voor hun  schild en zichzelf en als het koraal te dicht bij hun keel  komt kunnen ze zijn hoofd niet naar binnen doen. Olav

 

Als er teveel koraal aan een kant zit dan kunnen ze omkukelen. Je maakt ze schoon met een platte schroevendraaier. En je moet ook opletten dat ze niet kunnen bijten. Je maakt ze schoon als ze hun hoofd hebben ingestopt. Sven

 

 

Tubeworms,usually found in salt water, are building corallike homes on the backs of the Long and the Short neck turtles. The weight of this coral, up to 3 kg, is causing the turtles to flip over and they are unable to right themselves. Therefore they are unable to find food and are easy targets for predators. Students have been removing encrustation of coral from the shells of the turtles with screwdrivers and chisels. Once the coral is removed the turtles are transported back and released into lake Alexandrina or the Murray river.

Dangerous Creatures of Australia Australia is home to the world’s most venomous creatures. They are to be found in bushland, metropolitan parks and beaches, even our own backyards. All Australians should have knowledge of our venomous wildlife and an understanding of correct first-aid procedures. Prevention is always better than cure as nobody wants to have a holiday ruined by a bite or sting.
Venomous creatures use their venoms and stinging apparatus to immobilise food items and the venom is an aid in digesting such food items. Humans are usually accidental victims.
The creatures depicted here shall never rival the Koala or Red Kangaroo as popular symbols of Australia, yet they are a most important aspect of our wild life heritage.

Snakes

Snakes evoke a reaction in people and have been present throughout the history of man. Though they are generally shy, some possess highly toxic venoms, and Australia is home to the world’s most venomous (please see list of venomous snakes).
Parents should not encourage children to keep snakes, however interest in all aspects of environmental matters should be encouraged. Snakes cannot hear, they have no eyelids, no legs. All snakes are excellent swimmers and have a complex skeleton. Snakes are highly muscular.
The sense of smell is highly developed in snakes. The forked tongue of a snake picks up minute particles and is its main organ in locating food. The tongue is quite harmless. Snakes are opportunistic feeders and may go for lengthy periods without food. Snakes are of great economic importance as they are the main predators of rats and mice. Leave snakes alone!

This beautiful little creature has only been known to bite when taken out of the water. They are very small, rarely exceeding 15cm in leg span and most weigh 40 gms. They feed upon crabs and shellfish. They like to hide in bottles and cans.

Though small, they have enough venom to kill 10 adults. If taken from the water it feels threatened and bites with the aid of a parrot-like beak. Its mouth is situated where the 8 legs join.

When relaxed, it is grey or brown in colour. When alarmed, its blue rings are distinctive.

It is frequently found in shallow rock pools along the entire Australian coastline. Remember it is inoffensive unless picked up.

First-Aid for Snakebite
The pressure/immobilisation First-Aid Method

For bites to leg
1. Apply a broad pressure bandage over the bite site as soon as possible. Keep the victim still. Try to reassure.
2. The bandage should be as tight as you would apply to a sprained ankle.
3. Extend the bandages as high as possible.
4. Apply a splint to the leg e.g. a piece of timber. Apply the splint to as much of the leg as possible.

Bites on Hand or Forearm
1. Bind to elbow
2. Use splint to elbow
3. Use sling to support arm. Bandages and splint should not be removed until the patient has reached medical care. The doctor will decide when to remove the bandages.

Don’t cut or exercise the bitten area.
Don’t apply arterial tourniquets.
Don’t wash the bitten area. The snake involved may be identified by the detection of venom on the skin.
Bites to trunk
If possible apply firm pressure over the bitten area.

Bites to head or neck
No first aid for bitten area.

Land Creatures:

The Funnel Web Spider
The pressure/immobilisation method should be commenced as soon as possible and left in place until the patient is in hospital. Antivenom is now available.

Redback Spider
Do not use pressure/immobilisation method – pain relief may be obtained by applying ice and water in a plastic bag to affected area. Antivenom available – seek medical help immediately.

Ticks
The tick should be carefully removed as soon as possible. If the person is already ill, the pressure/immobilisation method should be used if possible to inhibit the movement of any toxic saliva which has been expressed during the removal of the tick.

Marine creatures which may cause death:

Blue Ringed Octopus
The pressure/immobilisation method is recommended. Prolonged artificial respiration and cardiac massage may be required. Antivenom not available.

Stonefish and other Stinging Fish
Do not restrict movement of the injected toxin. Pain relief is achieved by bathing the affected area in warm (but not scalding) water. Stonefish antivenom is available.

Box-Jellyfish (Sea Wasp)
Pour domestic vinegar (never methylated spirits or alcohol) over the adhering tentacles to inactivate them as soon as possible. Artificial respiration and cardiac massage may be required. Pressure/immobilisation method is recommended. Blue Bottle stings: wash with cold water and place ice pack on affected area. An antivenom is available.

Australian Freshwater Turtles

Australia is the driest of vegetated continents. Combined discharge of all of our rivers equals that of the Missouri River of North America, a tributary of the Mississippi.

Little wonder that the diversity of freshwater turtles in Australia does not compare well with that of the Americas or Asia.

However, like the marsupials, Australia’s freshwater turtle fauna is spectacularly different from a northern hemisphere perspective.All but one species belongs to the family Chelidae, a group of side-necked turtles found elsewhere only in South America, New Guinea and the small islands of Roti and Timor.

Among them are forms with the longest necks of any turtle, the rarest turtle in the world, and the only species known to nest underwater. Many have yet to be described.

The enigmatic Pig-Nosed Turtle is the sole surviving member of its family (Carettochelydidae), unique to the Australasian region, but of global interest.

We hebben hier helaas ook een stukje Eurovisiesongfestival gezien op de zender SBS. Dat is hier de enige zender die ook informatie verschaft over de rest van de wereld.

We zijn vanwege de slechte tv lid geworden van de videotheek. En meteen maar de film over Hanging Rock geleend. Geen topfilm overigens. Hanging Rock is een berg van gestolde lava waar we in Victoria zijn geweest. Leuk om de berg eens in de film te zien. Wat extra grappig om bij de aftiteling te zien dat de film is opgenomen bij zowel Hanging Rock als in ...............................Strathalbyn!!!!

We rented the DVD; Picnic at Hanging Rock, because we went to Hanging Rock when we lived in Victoria. We were very surprised to see at the end that they filmed the movie in Victoria at Hanging Rock, as well as in..... Strathalbyn SA!!!!

 

Dilemma op Martins werk: Wat kunnen we doen om op papier te bezuinigen? Moeten we dit wel doen? Was de vraag. Blijkbaar worden er veel bossen aangelegd voor de productie van papier en die bossen zorgen juist weer voor extra CO2!

Daar wordt de W.C. mee doorgespoeld.   Goede doelen Charity In Australie wordt heel wat gedaan aan geldinzamelingsacties voor een goed doel. Zo was er laatst een klas die voor Svens klas “frog in the pond” ging maken. Donatie: een a golden coin for Birma(dat is 1 of 2 dollar). Helaas was Sven die dag ziek en heeftie zijn”frog in the pond” gemist. Sven missed out on his frog in the pond so I made him one. Maar een paar dagen later heb ik ze maar gemaakt. Groene pudding met chocoladekikkers. Green jelly and chocolate frogs Een andere keer had een groep scholieren in de pauze een voetbalwedstrijd van leerlingen tegen onderwijzend personeel georganiseerd. Als je wilde aanmoedigen kon je iets doneren voor China en Birma. Dat hebben de jongens gedaan.     Onderweg Op weg naar zijn werk komt Martin vaak langs een kerkje met een opvallend uithangbord. Of je nu gelooft of niet, de teksten zijn altijd erg vindingrijk. If you believe or not, Martin passes on his way to work a church with very resourcefull signs: 1)   CH..CH What is missing??? 2)   God answers kneemail     Zo heb je iets om je hersens te kraken onderweg.   En vandaag is het dan officieel winter: 20 graden echt heeeeeeeerlijk weer!!! We zijn veel in de tuin. De jongens spelen Aussie footy op school en in de tuin. En vandaag hebben we wat rondgereden om de omgeving te verkennen. Veel mooie gebieden. Leuke plaatsjes als Meadows en Clarendon gezien. We zijn uitgestapt bij Mt Compass. Leuk om een ijsje te eten, maar de wandeling bij de wetlands is niet erg spectaculair. Al heb ik geprobeerd wat “ontdekjeplekjefoto’s” te maken.   Today its officially winter; 20 degrees and sunshine, the weather is great! The boys play footy (this time I mean Australian Football) at school and in the garden. We went for a ride to explore the surroundings. Beatifull places. Nice townships like Meadows and Clarendon.  We left the car at Mt Compass. Good for an icecream but the boardwalk along the wetlands is not what it used to be. Not very spectaculair although I tried to make some  pictures which would hide that feeling.
